Lake Kournas

Kournas is the only freshwater lake on the island formed by the water flowing down from the Lefka Ori Mountain range.

The lake has been known since ancient times under the name of Korissia . Indeed, a sanctuary is believed to have been built on the shores of the lake in honour of Athena Korissia .

In the Arabic language, the word Kournas denotes a bathtub and a lake, so it was probably the Arabs who renamed Korissia Kournas.

The dark waters of the lake impressed both tourists and locals alike as the lake was considered to be bottomless.

Lake Kournas is a few minutes drive from the village ot Georgioupolis and is a protected area because of the abundance of wildlife
